proliferate出现于1873年,由proliferation逆构而来,最初仅作为生物学术语用于形容细胞生长或繁衍后代。直到1961年后,proliferate才更为广泛地用于形容从核武器扩散到沃尔玛超市扩张等各类事物,主要强调短时间内快速增长、扩散、增殖等。值得注意的是,《不扩散核武器条约》的英语就是“Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”,缩写NPT,一般简称为《核不扩散条约》(Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty)。
